Barton DNA “Project 42”

Recruiting Page - March 2004

[Results Here]

Currently, Barton DNA Project is stumped on several of our Lineages in how to tie the known related, but unattached families together and in how to tie the unattached families into the ones with older pedigrees. Relative Genetics has held their testing to the 26 markers of our test, but a competitor, Family Tree DNA, has moved forward to "37" markers. There is quite a "buzz" among Surname Project Coordinators in trying out and attempting to understand the additional markers. The hope is that they will allow a finer discernment of relationships.

I have discussed our situation with Family Tree DNA and have gotten a special price for testing.  FTDNA’s testing is done in 3 “panels”. They will use our RG results for their Panel 1 and will test us on 2 more panels totaling 25 markers. There are some duplicates between our prior RG 26 marker testing and the 25 markers covered by these tests. When the two tests are merged, we will have results on a total of 42 markers, up from our current 26.

Barton Historical Society’s DNA Sponsorship Committee has authorized a Phase 1 limited test that we call “Project 42” and will pay a significant portion of the cost for up to 15 participants. (The full cost of each test is confidential, but I can share that cost privately with any member of BHS.)

It is not certain that the additional markers will give us clearer information or guide us in tying families of a Lineage together. This test is an experiment. To answer questions such as those listed below, we will examine the 42 marker results and compare them by family. Hopefully, we will see additional mutations occurring in patterns that give more structure to the family, instead of simply continuing the high number of 26/26 matches that are the current situation. Examples of what we hope to learn:

bulletDoes the Henry, b 1793 family have one or more families that it shares close ancestry with? (this family is one of our uniquely identified families, as all members share the same mutation at Y-GATA-H4.) Hopefully, they will share other mutations at some of the additional 16 markers with one or more other families.   (This question, described for the Henry family, exists for each "unattached" family in a Lineage)
bulletDo the Thomas m Sarah Wilson and David m Ruth Oldham families still share a very close match at 42 markers? Does this support the belief that they were brothers?
bulletHow closely does the Josiah family match the Stafford Co VA Bartons? the Baltimore Co MD Bartons? The PA Bartons? The Kent Bartons?

Project 42 Guidelines:

bulletPhase 1 is limited to our prior 116 test participants who are a part of Lineage I, II, III, VI, IX, XII or XIII
bullet Test cost for each participant is $100 (the remainder will be paid by Barton Historical Society)
bulletThe sponsorship offer is generally open to no more than two members of each Family.
bulletWe are looking for a perfect or near-perfect separation (ie 2 sons or grandsons of earliest ancestor)
bulletGenerally, we will take volunteers on a first-come basis, but will need to be able to select participants to maximize learning
bulletA participant who doesn’t qualify for sponsorship can participate by paying the full cost of the test (email me privately)
bulletTentative cutoff date for inclusion is March 27
bulletTesting will be done in a “batch” format.
bulletSuggested Goal is a minimum of 3 of 5 early Lineage I lines, plus at least 3-4 of the dozen orphan branches
bulletWe already have one volunteer from each of these families: Josiah, Thomas m Sarah Wilson, David m Ruth Oldham & Henry, b 1793.
bulletAfter Phase I, we regroup, decide if it was worth it and how to go at Phase II, if appropriate.
bulletComment:
bulletThere is little perceived value in initially testing only 1 or 2 men from a Lineage
bulletI wrote the examples above for Lineage I, but other Lineages could also be used if volunteers are available with the appropriate relationships. The other possible Lineages only make sense in this experimental testing if we get at least 3 “well placed” representatives

If you wish to participate or sponsor your previous participant again, please let me know privately.

Summary Page for Project 42

This is a test being conducted on volunteers from our Barton DNA Project to see if an upgrade from 26 markers to 42 markers will help us discern our family relationships.  There are 22 men in this test - 21 from Lineage I (and one man from Lineage VIII who has taken this opportunity to expand his markers in the hope of matching with our Surnames.)

The following listing was lifted from the primary Lineage I page and only includes the 21 representatives from Lineage I who make up Project 42.
